Focusing on Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia, this paper examines the development of nuclear power plants in South East Asia in the 21st century. Amongst other things, the authors assess the countries' nuclear waste management policies, legal and regulatory frameworks as well as nuclear safety and security measures. Based on this assessment, the authors recommend that ASEAN member countries should, for instance, strengthen national legislation on nuclear safety, security and safeguards; establish a regional/multilateral nuclear enrichment center; and build a regional nuclear crisis center.
