Nov 2014

In light of the upcoming November 2014 meeting between US president Obama and Chinese president Xi Jinping, this paper proposes three items for discussion. The author argues that Obama should 1) express the desire to move away from big conceptual frameworks on US-China relations toward practical cooperation and the management of differences; 2) engage President Xi in a conversation about how China perceives the “status quo” in Asia; and 3) clarify that China’s assertiveness in East Asia is challenging vital national interests of the United States.
