This commentary argues that at the 2014 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Beijing, China asserted its influence by setting out a roadmap for the creation of a Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP), overshadowing the rival initiative by the US and undermining Washington’s position as the Asia Pacific’s regional economic leader. The author also discusses the implications of this development for the ASEAN countries’ relations with Beijing.
