This commentary examines the advantages and disadvantages of the decision made by the leader of the so-called Islamic State (IS) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to declare himself as Caliph of the IS in 2014. The author argues that it is too early to determine whether Baghdadi’s positive assessment of the pros and cons of this move is justified.
