This commentary examines 1) some of the reasons behind the instability of the Russian ruble in late 2014; 2) the stress on Russia's political system which this instability may cause; and 3) whether this crisis could force the Kremlin to seek relief from the economic sanctions imposed by coming to an agreement with Kiev over the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
