This commentary contends that the Syrian and Iraqi Kurds’ battle against the Islamic State (IS) and resulting increase in their aspirations for their autonomy has led to an increase in the desire for equal rights and self-rule among Iran’s Kurdish population. The author also discusses how Iran has historically dealt with dissent among its Kurdish population and other minorities as well as how President Hassan Rouhani has adopted an alternative approach in line with his efforts to grant Iranians greater individual rights.
