This paper examines how increased competition between China and Japan has impacted Southeast Asia and ASEAN as well as how both Southeast Asia and ASEAN have responded to the tensions rising from this competition. Among other issues, the authors examine 1) the state of Sino-Japanese competition; 2) the impact of this competition on maritime engagement in Southeast Asia from the perspective of Indonesia; and 3) how Sino-Japanese competition has effected ASEAN's political and security institutions. They also provide policy recommendations for ASEAN on how to respond to the implications of Sino-Japanese competition.
