This paper discusses the approach Malaysia is likely to adopt in its territorial dispute with China over the Spratly Islands during its Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2015. The author contends that while Malaysia remains fully committed to a “common ASEAN position” in terms of engaging China on the South China Sea disputes, it does not want this to affect its good bilateral relations with Beijing. He therefore believes that it is unlikely that Kuala Lumpur will change its hedging policy in dealing with China.
