This paper briefly examines the implications of the terrorist attack against the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris in January 2015 for politics and security policy in France as well as what it could mean for social divisions in the country. The author argues that France should avoid responding to the attack with the threat of increased state violence as this would serve the interests of radical militant groups.
