This paper explores the global implications of the Boko Haram insurgency in northern Nigeria. The author argues that the group’s new focus on holding large swaths of territory is inspired by the rise of the so-called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq and part of a global Jihadist trend. He concludes that Boko Haram’s growing ambitions and resources make it a threat not only to Nigeria and its neighbors but to the entire continent of Africa and the West.
