This brief examines the threat the so-called Islamic State (IS) poses to Saudi Arabia and the strategy Riyadh has adopted to tackle it. The author contends that Saudi Arabia sees IS as a major threat to its national security as well as its interests in the region noting that the country cannot insulate itself from attacks as Mecca and Medina have been identified as targets of the group. He also highlights that Saudi Arabia has joined the coalition force against IS and that it supports the use of a greater number of ground forces in the fight against the group.
