This paper examines what approach the US, as well as its allies, should adopt in its relations with China and contends that to avoid conflict, Washington should pursue a more accommodating strategy than the one it is currently pursuing. The author also offers policy recommendations for the US on what such a policy should consist of, suggesting that a first priority in managing the relationship should be for Washington to attempt to establish clear ideas about acceptable conduct in the maritime, space and cyber domains.
