This paper examines the implications which a possible escalation of conflict between Japan and China could have for Australia and the US. The authors argue that Australia should assume that China and Japan may not be able to avoid hostilities over their conflicting East China Sea territorial claims and that those hostilities could easily escalate into a much more serious conflict, potentially involving the United States and even possibly crossing the nuclear threshold.
