This paper provides an overview of global developments in 2014, focusing on the continuous rise of terrorism and extremism. More specifically, it looks at 1) the potential impact of the withdrawal of US and International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) from Afghanistan; 2) the declaration of a so-called Islamic Caliphate by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS); 3) the threat posed by Boko Haram in Nigeria; and 4) the continuous attacks by insurgent and right-wing armed criminal groups in Colombia.
