This article addresses the state of the EU and European integration and argues that the future of the European project is facing serious problems. The author also suggests that there are three main interrelated developments that have contributed to the state of the EU: 1) the failure of political imagination and leadership in the Union; 2) the lack of a focus on the significance of geopolitics by political leaders in the EU; and 3) the level of technocracy in Europe and issues of legitimacy.
