In light of recent debates over meritocracy in Singapore, this paper examines what the country regards as 'merit'. The author explains that several concepts have emerged that reflect the evolution of meritocracy in the country, including ‘compassionate meritocracy’, ‘trickle up meritocracy’ and ‘meritocracy through life’.
