This commentary looks at the legacy of Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the late spiritual leader of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), focusing on how his religious education abroad and experiences in Malaysia and overseas contributed to his reformist-modernist political thinking. The author argues that Nik Aziz’s passing leaves an enormous void in the leadership of PAS and raises questions about where the party might head in the near future.
