This paper examines the effectivness of the EU as a mediator in its southern neighborhood, with a particular focus on its mediation activities in Egypt during the period between the presidency of Mohammed Morsi and Abdul-Fattah Al-Sisi. The author first assesses the institutional reforms in the EU that the he states have strengthened the Union’s role in international peace mediation. He then reviews the EU’s response to the political transformations that happened in the Middle East and North Africa following the Arab Spring in 2011 as well as the factors that contributed to the successes and failures of EU’s mediation efforts in the region.
