This paper discusses the approach the Kremlin is taking to bring the Republic of South Ossetia, which declared independence from Georgia in 1990, under greater Russian influence. More specifically, the author discusses 1) the history of South Ossetia and how the region relates to Russia and Georgia; 2) some of the clauses in the "Treaty of Alliance and Integration" which is in the process of being drafted between Russia and South Ossetia; and 3) whether Russia's involvement in South Ossetia is part of a wider strategy of annexation.
