This brief examines 1) India's 2015-2016 defense budget and 2) the state of the economic situation in the country and the government's fiscal situation as well as the implications these have for the country's defense policy. The author also examines the implications for India's defense budget of the Indian government's 'Make in India' initiative, which aims to improve the country's defense manufacturing sector, and the country's 14th Finance Commission report.
