This commentary discusses US policy towards Russia following Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 as well as its involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. In general, the author contends that the confrontational approach to Moscow adopted by Washington is misguided. This is because he believes that Ukraine is of marginal geopolitical significance to the United States and as the White House needs the Kremlin’s cooperation on the more salient issues of counter-proliferation, counter-terrorism, and how to deal with the rise of China.
