This commentary examines the origins, development and different meanings of the terms Salafi and Salafism as well as the different groups and individuals associated with these terms. He also addresses the ambiguous ways in which the terms have been used in the contemporary period and contends that the pivotal question of who or what group qualifies as Salafi remains in dispute.
