This paper examines the present state of US-Japanese defense cooperation and how it might be strengthened further. More specifically, the paper elaborates on 1) the historic interests that have guided US policy in the Asia-Pacific region; 2) the evolution of US-Japan defense cooperation since 1978; 3) the substance of the Joint Statement of the US-Japan Security Consultative Committee (dated 3 October 2013); and 4) the factors that will shape the pending review of the Guidelines for US-Japan Defense Cooperation.
