This report examines the evolution of ASEAN from its foundation in 1967 to the present day. It also highlights the drivers behind the Association’s development. Finally, the report analyzes 1) how the rise of China has affected multilateralism in Southeast Asia and the implications this has for the future of ASEAN; and 2) the role of the US in supporting ASEAN and why Washington has an interest in seeing the consolidation of a viable supranational body in Southeast Asia.
