This commentary discusses China’s “One Belt, One Road” or Silk Road Economic Belt initiative, which refers to Beijing’s plan to connect China with Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe as well as the infrastructure, trade, investment, economic cooperation, and foreign relations policies this would involve. Among other issues, the author focuses on 1) the importance given to the policy by China, claiming that it has become a priority in Beijing’s foreign policy; 2) whether the initiative is a response to the US strategic pivot towards the Asia-Pacific; and 3) how other countries have responded to the initiative.
