This commentary discusses China’s 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR) initiative, the aim of which is to revive ancient trade links and improve regional relations in the South China Sea, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean. In general, the author argues that China has not given sufficient attention to communicating its intentions for the MSR or in dealing with the strategic concerns of countries in South and Southeast Asia about the MSR, particularly in light of the unresolved regional disputes in the South China Sea.
