This research note provides an overview of the capabilities and characteristics of automatic grenade launchers (AGL), self-loading guns that fire a medium caliber explosive projectile at relatively low velocities and at a relatively slow rate of fully automatic fire. The author also touches on 1) how these weapons were developed; 2) the variants of the weapon which are man-portable; and 3) the development of advanced fire control systems and airburst munitions, which could be used with AGL systems.
