This publication reviews how domestic and global influences are shaping US defense strategy in the Gulf region, and recommends ways that Washington could engage more effectively with local states in the future. In the last case, the authors argue that US should pursue a strategy that reassures regional partners, deters adversaries, supports counterterrorism activities, and advances political development as an antidote to extremism and instability.
