This paper analyzes the notion of "Arctic exceptionalism" arguing that the Arctic today is not only global but no different from any other region in terms of being increasingly subject to politico-strategic dynamics. More specifically, the authors 1) discuss the recent history of Arctic exceptionalism; 2) examine why the Arctic is often considered to be an exceptional zone of peace and cooperation; and 3) illustrate how forces and dynamics external to the region (such as the ongoing crisis in Ukraine) have had an impact on cooperation in and governance of the Arctic.
