This paper examines what a possible Australian–Japanese submarine deal would mean for the wider relationship between the two countries, as well as its geostrategic implications. The authors argue that while there are some downsides to a potential deal with Japan, such as Tokyo’s inexperience with the export of submarines, these have been exaggerated by critics. Indeed, they suggest that an Australia-Japan submarine deal would actually make Japan more likely to work with its allies and partners on the development of a common view on a regional order, and that this would be of benefit to Australia.
