This brief examines why the EU should revive its negotiations over a free trade agreement with the South American regional organization MERCOSUR. The author argues that the conditions to move on a deal are good, partly because Brazil wants to speed up the negotiations as demonstrated by its decision to put pressure on Argentina to stop prolonging the talks in 2014. He warns that the EU must act soon as otherwise Mercosur may start to focus more on building up its economic links with the Asia-Pacific, something which will make negotiations more difficult in the future.
