This paper discusses the state of defense cooperation between the UK and Japan three years on from a 2012 memorandum on such cooperation and how global geopolitical developments -- such as the rise of China and the US strategic pivot to Asia -- constrain the ties between the two countries. The author also discusses how strategic developments in both countries and the 70th anniversary of WWII in 2015 will inform the relationship between Japan and the UK as well as both countries’ idea of their role in the world.
