This commentary discusses Malaysia’s introduction of the 2015 Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) to deal with the threat posed by terrorist groups as well as foreign fighters returning from transnational groups such as the so-called Islamic State. The author particularly focuses on the preventive detention laws outlined in the POTA, including the argument for such laws as well as the controversy created by them.
