This commentary discusses the problems facing Australia’s submarine acquisition program to replace its existing fleet. The author also reviews the main contender countries that could supply the submarines and argues that Australia could be better off accepting the design of a smaller and cheaper submarine from a European builder rather than the option proposed by Japan.
