This commentary suggests that the fall in oil and gas prices since mid-2014 has had an impact on the security of tankers around the world as it has led to such shipping to be left sitting idle in regions where they are more vulnerable to attack. The author also discusses what can be done to tackle this security threat, arguing that it would involve an increase in on-board security and patrols of high risk areas, better coordination between littoral states, and more effective onshore policing.
