This paper worries that as Australia increases its focus on its global interests, it may neglect to deal with its regional problems too. As a result, it 1) examines the attitudes the Australian government and independent scholars currently have towards aid, development, and conflict prevention, and 2) identifies ways that Canberra can promote regional growth and stability in times of austerity. The latter efforts won't succeed, however, unless the country improves the quality of its aid, diplomacy and security relations.
