This paper discusses the factors that led to the US strategic pivot towards Asia and argues that the aim of the pivot was to stymie China's spread of influence and territorial control in Southeast Asia. The authors then provide an overview of the partnerships and arrangements which the US has with Thailand, Australia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar, as well as the importance to Washington of working with these countries to make the pivot strategically effective.
