This commentary discusses China's use of live coral reefs on and around the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea as building material to reclaim land. In particular, the author examines 1) the methods China is using to turn the coral reefs into building material; 2) the impact this is having on the marine environment and fisheries; and 3) why these land reclamation activities are likely in breach of international law.
