This commentary discusses Russia’s potential role in supplying railroad technology to Southeast Asia to quench the region's increased demand for land transportation. The author expands on the limitations and challenges of Russia’s possible railroad technology export to Southeast Asia, explaining that 1) Russian trains are built with a wider gauge track than Asian states; 2) Russia would encounter funding issues due to its difficult financial conditions in comparison to other railroad-technology exporting countries; and 3) ASEAN states favor high-speed passenger trains, whereas Russia deals primarily in industrial freight trains.
