This commentary criticizes China's strategy of establishing naval and air force facilities on disputed reefs and shoals in order to strengthen its claim to disputed territorial areas of the South China Sea. The author contends that these bases are in fact of little strategic and military value and only serve to antagonize ASEAN member states who have rival claims to these areas.
