This paper includes a number of articles on the First Principles Review of Defence, which was commissioned by Australia’s government in August 2014 to examine the country’s defense establishment and whether it is fit for purpose. Among other topics, the articles look at: the reasons for the review; the joint management of Australian defense by Chief of the Defence Force and the Secretary for the Department of Defence; the approach to organizational reform set out in the review; and the review’s proposals for the Australian Defence Force’s system for military capability development.
