This paper discusses India's decision to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran in May 2015 to help develop the Port of Chabahar in south-eastern Iran. More specifically, the author looks at 1) the implications of the success of the P5+1 nuclear negotiations with Iran for India's plans for Chabahar; 2) the potential for cooperation between Tehran's and New Delhi's beyond the port; 3) Iran's perception of the MoU and the prospects for India's continued involvement in the Chabahar project; 4) the strategic and economic significance of Chabahar for India as well as Afghanistan; and 5) China's interests in the project.
