This paper canvases German-Israeli diplomatic relations over the last 50 years. More specifically, the text looks at 1) the long-term evolution of German-Israeli political, economic and security cooperation; 2) Germany’s post-Holocaust attempts at societal reconciliation; and 3) the current factors hindering these efforts, which include the two countries' demographic trends, the tense relations that exist between the Merkel and Netanyahu governments, and the ever-present shadow of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Finally, the paper recommends ways that Germany might reassess its policy towards Israel, but only while keeping its historical responsibility to the Jewish community in mind.
