This paper examines how ASEAN countries have responded to the human rights and security challenges stemming from the refugee crisis involving the large-scale exodus of the Muslim ethnic group, the Rohingyas, from Myanmar. In general, the author contends that ASEAN states, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, have been reluctant to accept the large number of Rohingyas into their countries during the crisis and that ASEAN has not been able to provide an effective response to the problem. The author also reviews the history of Rohingya migration in the region and some of the security implications that could result from the migration crisis.
