This paper looks at the jihadist terrorist organizations operating in Africa, including their origins and development, the regions they operate in, and the groups’ ties to each other and transnational terrorist networks. More specifically, the paper 1) focuses on the jihadist organizations operating in Somalia, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Mali and their immediate regions; 2) it concludes that although some of these jihadist groups possess well-developed regional networks and lend one another manpower and technical support, there is no overarching command structure within or outside of Africa; and 3) the paper emphasizes that to understand these groups and the nature of instability in Africa, it is important to always examine local contexts.
