This paper assesses Indonesia’s defense diplomacy and discusses its policy responses to emerging regional trends such as the rise of China. The author explains the security concerns and policy directions of Indonesia, and argues that the country is pursuing two-pronged defense diplomacy that consists of strategic engagement and military modernization. He then reviews the recent developments in the country’s defense diplomacy, and concludes by pondering its future.
