This paper discusses food stockpiling as a policy approach to ensure the stability of food supplies - in part to deal with the problems created by the volatility of the global food market - through an examination of such policies in South and Southeast Asia. In particular, the authors identify 1) different types of stockpiling; 2) trends in public stockpiling since the 2007/2008 food price crisis; and 3) the challenges and consequences that governments must expect if they adopt a policy of stockpiling. The authors also provide recommendations on how to improve the implementation of stockpiling policies.
