This paper discusses the implications of the geopolitical situation in Central Asia for China's Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) initiative. More specifically, the author examines relations between Central Asian states, the influence of Russia and the US in the region and how each of these actors has reacted to the SREB. He contends that while Central Asian states are interested in the potential economic opportunities created by the SREB, they are also wary of China's expanding economic influence in the region. He also contends that Russia is unlikely to support the SREB due to its own interests in Central Asia. Finally, he provides recommendations on what China should prioritize in building its Silk Road initiative.
