This paper argues that Asia is facing a looming fishing crisis due to over-fishing and pollution, and that the prevention of this crisis depends largely on China. This is because 1) China has the largest fishing industry in the world; 2) it relies too much on the fishing sector for food security; and 3) Beijing has involved fishermen in its maritime disputes with neighboring countries. The author concludes by offering recommendations for China on how to reform its fishing policies to avert this looming fishing crisis, including the suggestion that Beijing must adopt a sustainable fishing policy and reconsider its involvement of fishermen in its territorial disputes.
