This paper looks at the US Department of Defense Third Offset Strategy, which was launched in November 2014 and aims to sustain and advance Washington's military dominance in the 21st Century. More specifically, the author focuses on 1) the Defense Innovation Initiative (DII) element of this strategy, which aims to ensure that the US can still produce cutting edge technology and innovation in a time of more limited resources and 2) the implications of the Third Offset for the security environment in the Asia Pacific and Washington's ability to counter any threat that China could pose in the future.
